Yeah, I noticed the ratings weren't as high as I had expected them to be. It was 45th in the Nielsen ratings; detoured, I know you have access to some sort of different ratings systems. Most of the Mulderless eps were in the 40s in the Nielsen ratings, too, but the previous Mulder eps this year ("WI/WO", "The Gift", "Per Manum" and "TiNH") were all in the top 35 of their weeks.
I've got a couple of possible explanations: 1.) people were getting really tired of being jerked around by being told Mulder was going to be "in" an episode, only to see him for a total of about 20 seconds, as happened in "WI/WO" and "TiNH"; I think everybody pretty much knew that about all he was going to do in this episode was lay around in a hospital bed; the ratings will probably be higher next week for a hale-and-hearty Mulder!
2.) The entire Fox Sunday night lineup ranked in the 40s this week in the Nielsen ratings. Usually both "The Simpsons" and "Malcolm in the Middle" are top 35 shows, but they were just a notch or two above XF this week.
As for the ninth season debate. . .quite frankly, I still think it would be a better deal for them to just go ahead and end it now and get to work on another movie as soon as all the strike business is settled. If they do another season, I can deal with it as long as Mulder's in at least half the eps, but I think another Mulderlite season would hurt the chances of a successful movie franchise.
I'm also in a bit of a quandry over "Dark Angel" and XF. Apparently Fox has pretty much made up its mind to renew one or the other, but not both shows, as both are expensive to produce and get only mediocore ratings. As much as I love XF, I think it's beginning to run out of creative steam and would be better as a movie series from here on out. "DA", on the other hand, still has a lot of room for the characters to grow and develop and a lot of story ideas to explore; I'd hate to see it get cancelled after a single season.
