Subject: Are you talking about bringing in new characters?
In reply to: CW who will take all well-written shows! 's message, "Look what happened to MASH--it just got stronger and stronger! NIM" on 19:22:48 08/10/00 Thu

I agree MASH still stayed strong and was even better in its mid years when Potter and BJ were brought in. But MASH was more of an ensemble piece and could survive some changes. The X-Files is really a rarity because it relies so heavily on just two characters. I think there have been very few TV shows that have been on the air as many years as TXF and kept the same cast.
And on MASH, while I think the show was still good with some cast changes, I don't think it could have continued if Hawkeye had left. I recently saw on of those 'behind the scenes' things about MASH and it talked about actors who left and why. Larry Linville who played Frank said that he was tired of playing the same role. Hmm, sound like anyone we know?;-) Loretta Swit (Margaret) wanted to leave about 3 years before the series ended but they wouldn't let her. The show was able to continue when it lost people but when Alan Alda finally said he wanted to call it quits that's when the show ended because I think they knew it couldn't continue without Hawkeye.

CC may be of the impression that The X-Files is bigger than Mulder and Scully and can survive their loss. I'm not sure of that at all.
