All I tried to do was point out that with a lot of dedication, a quality program can go on for many years. I saw the same behind the scenes you are talking about as well as Alan Alda's biography on A&E (or was it AMC--can't remember.) It was quite interesting and pointed out why the show's episodes became better--he was doing more writing, directing and acting. I agree that the show just wouldn't have been possible without Hawkeye!

What I hope could happen would be for DD to do this same sort of thing. What a creative challenge it could be for him--if he would look at it that way anyhow! There are so many episodes that could be written for supporting characters other than CSM who seems to have become a leading character, ugh! But at least he is part of the myth to some degree so I guess we have to put up with him.

Larry Linville had such a degrading part that I don't blame him for wanting to leave. Has Loretta Swit even had a career since she left MASH? I've lost track of her. My point here is that when you have a good thing going, why change too much? DD and GA could easily still be the leading roles--I could imagine having them in most of the episodes in varying amounts of time and still carry out the the MSR and Mythology successfully! It would just take some careful planning and good writing!
