I really feel that GA *COULD* have carried the show on her own and is being denied that chance! I think if they would have just left Scully to carry on alone until Mulder returned — with help from the supporting characters they already have, like Skinner, The Lone Gunmen, her mother and brother, Marnita and Krycek, etc. — Season 8 would have been pretty good.
But apparently CC and the Fox execs thought that GA "just couldn't handle" being the solo star of the series. (Despite the fact that several very successful dramas — like "Judging Amy" and "Providence" basically showcase a single actress as the main character.) So they've provided her with another man to help "carry the load".
I don't know that I would go quite so far as to demote DD to the status of a "guest star". He's going to appear in at least 11 of the 20 eps they're shooting this season. (Some articles I've read put the number of Mulder eps as high as 13.) In other primetime dramas, those with ensemble casts, (i.e. "NYPD Blue", "ER", etc.) an actor can still be considered a bona fide member of the cast even if there are 7-9 eps per season that he doesn't appear in. Which, I think, is *EXACTLY* what DD has been lobbying for! He's been wanting to expand the roles of Skinner, The Lone Gunmen, etc. so that he and/or GA didn't have to appear in every single episode!
I think you're right; the ratings will sink into the cellar and GA will get the "blame" for it, even though it won't really be her fault.
