First of all, let me amend my original statement: Yes, an eighth season with a different actor playing Mulder would be the *ABSOLUTE* worst. Even worse than a season of no Mulder at all. I guess that scenario is so hideous I didn't even contemplate it.
Here's an idea that *MIGHT* work. . .we know GA and DD both want to work less, right? We know The Lone Gunmen (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haguland and Bruce Haywood) want their own show. Apparently, Mitch Pileggi doesn't object to continuing to play Skinner.
So. . .it seems to me there was some long running show, back in the 70s, where the show was slowly taken over by characters who were originally supposed to be supporting characters, while the original "stars" were eventually reduced to cameo appearances. Perhaps something like that could happen here? The show would still be "The X-Files". Mulder and Scully — when they appeared — would still be portrayed by DD and GA. But the majority of the episodes would feature the Gunmen and/or Skinner. DD and GA would make cameo appearances in about one-third of the episodes, not appear at all in about one-third of the episodes and actually be featured in only seven or eight eps during Season 8.
Not a perfect solution, I know, but the best I can think of given the various personalities involved, etc.
