Okay, I just read this on the entertainment wire. (I work at a newspaper.) This is speculation, but it is speculation from an "insider"; a professional entertainment writer. Most likely scenario: "The X-Files" will return, but will only do 18 eps next season instead of the standard 22. (Ironically, the only other network show to ever get away with shooting 18 eps and calling it a season is the one CC is always saying he's not doing - "Moonlighting".) DD will appear in only a dozen eps and will write/direct at least two of them. Apparently, the negotiations between CC, DD and the Fox execs centers on which eps DD will appear in. Fox execs want him to appear in the "sweeps months" eps — four in November, four in February and four in May. CC and DD both feel it would make more sense for Mulder to simply be gone for the first six eps (alien-abducted, consortium-kidnapped, "dead", whatever) then make a dramatic reappearance during the February sweeps and be on the show from then until May. In either case MP will be promoted to the third lead, rather than just a supporting character. A new supporting character will probably be added to assist Scully and the Lone Gunmen will appear more frequently. DD will effectively have his workload cut in half; from 22 eps this season in which he appeared (at least briefly) in every one to 12 eps next season.
This sounds like a pretty good deal. Let's see what happens.
