Subject: Without Mulder

Oh, quelle surprise - it wasn't Mulder on the cliff! I sussed that out before, to be truthful, seeing as this Mulder was a stuffed dummy and had nothing to say.

What was good about this episode was how Doggett would not allow Scully's 'bad attitude' to throw him off his game. He could so easily have dismissed her and Skinner and become hostile, but he didn't and he was extremely solicitous to her at the end, when she was crying. I really felt for her then. She had reached a point of misery over Mulder and when she showed weakness and emotion(which must have been awful for her) Doggett was very kind. To give her that kind of a hug was generous and I think points to his future character.

JD also got to see some of the strange things for himself: 'Mulder' falling off a cliff and walking away and the mysterious shapeshifting Scully. He did see her and I think he was unsure of himself a little there. One thing I liked was how Scully suddenly gave in and started talking alien abduction theory. Mulder's in a spaceship, Gibson's part alien etc and it reminded me of The Pilot, in the graveyard, when Mulder bombarded Scully with all his alien theories all at once and it was overkill. I mean, in 'Within' Skinner and Scully were being warned about not mentioning aliens and next minute she's telling all to JD. He must have felt flabberghasted and incredulous.

A question: is it possible for someone on foot to chase and keep up with someone riding a bicycle? Scully chased the girl from the deaf school and the girl had peddled away at speed to warn Gibson. Odd. I felt so sorry for Scully when she resorted to walking around the desert calling out Mulder's name and I felt even sorrier for Mulder when he was calling for her! It's all too distressing.

Good for Doggett, too, when he encountered Kersh again and was no pushover. Doggett had taken on board what Scully had said about Kersh setting him up to fail and I mentally cheered when Doggett stuck to his guns. A good episode if tragically inconclusive from a finding Mulder perspective, but great for establishing the way forward for Doggett's character. It works for me!
