that Mulder and Scully had a whole year of being in an intimate relationship with each other before he was abducted. If we go with an "all things" consumation theory, then we have to accept (even allowing for the notoriously wonky XF time frame) that they were lovers for no more than four months before his abduction; and half of that time would have been spent in "recovery". . .Mulder from his tobacco-bug virus in "Brand X" and both of them from the injuries inflicted by the dopplegangers in "Fight Club".
All of this actually ties in with Detoured's orginal post; that by "Orison" (which was several months before "all things" and just after "Millennium") Mulder was already walking into Scully's bedroom unannounced, despite the fact that she could have been changing clothes in there. And it makes Mulder's "not in the usual sense of the phrase" reply to the "Are you in a relationship" question of "Chimera" something that can be interpreted as "Yes, I have a lover. But we can't do the usual things most lovers do, like set up housekeeping together, because the powers that be would use it to separate us."
