The MSR versus the DRR

As I think most of you know, I wasn't a regular viewer of seasons eight and nine, so my grasp of the DRR is somewhat shaky. However, my impression was that it was quite a different relationship from the MSR.
Mulder and Scully were close in age and professional experience when they first teamed up. Both were also unmarried and childless. They went through a lot in their years on the X-Files, (deaths of family members, alien abductions, committments to mental faciltiies, etc.) but they went through it together.
Doggett seemed to be significantly older than Reyes (like 10 or 12 years) and had been through a lot of life experiences -- marriage, fatherhood, death of a child, divorce, etc. -- long before he ever met her. So I'm assuming their relationship played out more as an "older man/younger woman" type dynamic?
