KS looms over Kande. "Those weren't on the lists I circulated!" She picks up a roll of hand-knitted socks. "These will do, but those pocket protectors!"

Kande looks up at her, the wrinkles around her eyes already prominent. "I don't know what you're talking about. Socks and pocket protectors were on the lists I circulated three months ago."

"Rats! Foiled again!" KS mutters, fists clenched. "I think I'll start your 40th birthday lists this week."

"Whatever." Kande yawns and stretches and then falls off the bleacher she's been sleeping on. "I've got to practice my free throws." She gets up and hobbles towards the net, her 39-year-old muscles and bones protesting the quick shuffle. She starts tossing the ball at the net.

KS whistles and motions toward the door. KM and CW come into view, holding aloft a 5-tiered chocolate cake on a handknitted platter. Rabid, SMH, Det, and the others follow, holding candles and singing happy birthday. Kande doesn't even notice, so obsessed is she by her free throw attempts.

KS rubs her palms together. "Well, I didn't get her socks or a pocket protector. And it looks like this chocolate cake may belong to me if Kande isn't going to stop her little basketball fetish."
