I really doubt the witnesses/builders actually came forward on their own accord, rather were sought out by journalists/authors. I have my doubts that the authors actually talked to these witnesses.
In Guiliano's Rock Report audio (I have the casette of it floating around somewhere), someone purporting to be builder "Marty" is interviewed in what is most likely a staged, scripted presentation with a silly altered voice. For those who never heard it, this builder admits to drowning Brian accidentally with accomplices during what can only be described as very rough horseplay.
