With Brian and the Stones world famous and countless records reaching number 1, Brian through various accounts, went through a drastic change personality wise. The question in my opinion is this: Was it because he was treated like crap by his own band (I have given numerous examples already) or did he deserve the crap given due to being so out of his mind with drugs and being an asshole to his friends in the band. Which came first? Did the fame change Brian or did he change out of necessity (constantly being picked on by Mick and Keith) as they have said themselves, they were merciless on Brian and probably went too far. Brian was quiet and sensitive to begin with and to be picked on 365 days a year, from members in your own band, whom were supposed to be your "friends", would drive anyone crazy!! In my opinion it was probably a little bit of both... but Mick and Keith definitely do NOT deserve a free pass on this and probably pushed Brian to taking more drugs/booze which of course led Brian to being sick, and missing various gigs/recordings. Again the Ying & Yang with these three and do not forget ALO as well teaming up on Brian. ALO has admitted the only time he got along with Brian when they did drugs together other wise they had "no use for one another". So where does all of this lead to? Brian started to be less good at playing guitar. Claims made by Bill and Keith.

Personally, I believe Brian was getting bored with the Richards/Jagger songs (same 3 chords etc...) and wanted keep things fresh for himself. Since he wasn't aloud to bring his own songs in recording sessions (Mick/Keith hogging all of the song writing royalties/spotlight) and being told over and over again "YOU CANT WRITE SONGS!! Brian had to look for a new challenge to stay focused... in other words, keep things interesting. One last feeling I get with Jagger/Richards regarding song writing credits is this... they remind me of spoiled children that will not share a new toy or game and take what is not there's either. I can hear them saying "IT'S MINE"!! Greedy little bastards. Perhaps I am wrong, but that has always been a gut feeling of mine regarding those two taking credit for songs that they did not write. Or stole sounds from other artists and used for their own material (stole from a Supreme's as well).

Brian, by late 1965 early 1966 had to make a new niche for himself. He did this by playing different instruments on various recordings. No longer just playing guitar or the harp he added a slew of new sounds to the new albums being released. Today a band would need to hire 10-15 different people to play the parts. Brian did it all by himself!! Of course Keith bitches about the fact that Brian "almost never played guitar anymore so I had to dub all of his parts". Wah, wah, wah, Keith!! That's because Brian was playing Sitar, Organ, Piano, Dulcimer, marimbas, bells and Saxaphone and other instuments. Making songs that became number 1. Songs that never would have been recorded and released if NOT for BRIAN changing instruments from Guitar. Please hear the song Paint It Black... and you know what I mean. So who is right and who is wrong? Keith says Brian stopped playing the guitar... did it hurt the band or help the band move in an entirely different direction (gaining new fans in the process)? Good question, no?

More later,

George
