Oh yes!! Mary Hallett was an utterly lovely woman. Once she made us lunch and was so solicitous of Brian it was like he was her own kid! She kept insisting he eat. She was a true Sussex countrywoman, very down to earth take no shit kind of lady, but called me Miss, which sort of freaked me out. I was still very much an American even though Id grown a Sussex accent from living there since 1960, and her formality with me just felt wrong! We went to the pub in the village once and Brian was just like one of the locals. No airs, just like them. He really did love living there and it looked to me like they accepted him. I think I was there maybe three times, at Cotchford, that is.
