If he hadn't been so engrossed in his book, he would probably have heard her puttering around and definitely would have caught her approach to his office, but as it was, he didn't notice her until she spoke - and then he jumped and inhaled a sharp breath before grinning sheepishly and running a hand slowly over his thoroughly mussed hair. "I told them I would only come back if I could have my old office..." He teased her gently with a wink as he laid the book down on his chest and pushed himself up a bit so that he wasn't slouching quite as much - his eyes warm as they swept over her casually, and his features relaxed. He wasn't all that surprised to see her there - despite that it was a Sunday night, he figured if he was going to see anyone there, it would probably be her over anyone else. All the other members of the english department were either old enough that they were indifferent to the start of a new term or already totally prepared, and the few members who were their age or younger were only TAs with no real responsibilities yet except to help out with grading and mentoring, essentially. "What are you doing here so late on a Sunday, sweetheart? Surely you have better places to be." He knew she would be working on last minute preparations though and making sure that everything was good to go for her first class - for all her endearingly flakey ways, she had always been on top of her work.
