What's funny is that I just watched a movie set in rural England right at the start of World War I (i.e. about 100 years ago). While this was obviously after electricity was available, it was equally obvious that they didn't have it in the particular household where this drama was set, as people were using candles, lanterns, etc. to read by after darkness fell.

Yet the people seemed VERY civilized. . .dressing for dinner, debating the global political situation, playing classical music on the piano, etc. So it's kind of hard for me to buy into the "no electricity = uncivilized behavior" argument that is apparently the whole basis of "Revolution".
