I give them leeway if the story takes place over a period of years, so the character has to age between their 20s & old age. Can't do much about age differences there unless you use different actors for different ages which could get confusing.

I saw a BBC production in which Christopher Eccleston (Dr. Who) played John Lennon around the time he met Yoko. John would have been in his late 20s (& only lived to be 40) while the actor was in his 40s. The long hair might have hidden some of his age but he did seem an older Lennon (who perhaps was more mature than his age).

Or in the film Goodfellas, I realized the Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci characters are supposed to be the same age. I think of Pesci & DeNiro as the same age & Liotta as younger but the beginning makes it clear the 2 characters were boys when taken under DeNiro's wing.
