So the Griffs potentially fire Reggie Witherspoon to hire a young new head coach and become like what? Niagara? The head coach isn’t the problem no one can recruit with the KAC facilities beyond what we are seeing between Reggie Witherspoon at best the new Griffs coach would get Canisius to Greg Paulus Niagara level? Is that really changing anything at Canisius? I say no. Until there is a huge financial commitment and facilities upgrade nothing changes beyond existing which is what Griffs basketball is right now.

Am I disappointed Canisius University choses to take this path yes. Am I upset about it? No and I am a former Griffs team manager it is the way Canisius University wants to go. I have given up long ago expecting any real change with Griffs basketball. Canisius to me seems more committed toward Griffs hockey now than the Griffs basketball program there facilities are nicer downtown where Griffs basketball use to be. Canisius hockey is a big part of what is wrong with Griffs basketball the resources are too stretched. Niagara same problem as Canisius exactly a hockey program that takes a lot of resources to filled a hockey team. St Bonaventure isn’t funding a hockey program that is very costly they are smarter that is just reality.

Again it is what it is. As a Griffs basketball supporter if I was in charge Griffs hockey would be shutdown at years end with all the unnecessary hockey expenses. The money saved would go into the Griffs basketball program. Until either more money is raised not happening or either hockey or basketball is dropped nothing is happening to really improve the situation. Do both this is the results you get two programs that exist. I don’t blame Reggie Witherspoon or any coach because you can’t win at Canisius with the present athletics business model. Are you saying no coach can fix this? Yes unless you hire a priest that also basketball coaches taking most of his coaching salary and donates towards Canisius University to buy dates in the Key Bank Center to use for basketball recruiting purposes? Who is realistically going do that? Most likely no one so Griffs basketball can’t be fixed. I will believe Canisius University is really changing when there is a commitment to play games at Key Bank Center again. Key Bank Center should be our permanent basketball home not KAC in my opinion. Go Griffs! Let’s Go Buffalo

There is one sport that puts Canisius on the map.

Bottom line it’s men’s basketball. This sport helped to build our name in athletics. It needs to be our flagship product.

We should have the highest expectations when it comes to men’s basketball. We shouldn’t settle to be just okay or at .500.

I have no issue with men’s hockey. It’s easier for us to make the NCAA tournament. We also have had some success & they generate more money on their own via past player contributions.

The school & needs to readjust their focus. The primary focus needs to be on men’s basketball. Go Griffs!

Nice post Buffalo Super Fan! It's really all about money. Face it, the University just doesn't have the resources to build a new arena like Fairfield, and there is no way the Key Bank Arena would be affordable, or feasible. The KAC, with 2 thousand seats is our home court for the foreseeable future. Some cosmetic changes could make the place more acceptable. You are right on regarding recruiting and expectations for the program. Remember the Griffs are a mid major program, and I believe we can be competitive at this level. I also disagree with your suggestion to drop hockey. Hockey is a popular sport among young people, and is doing fine at it's downtown rink. Go Griffs!!!
