Re: RIP Colonel Jim McNicholas -- Griff, Thu, February 22 2024, 15:09:19
One of the absolute best men I've ever met through Canisius basketball. I would always make a point to look for and say hello to Jim on my way in. This one really hits me. Two quick stories that come to mind -
For those who have been around long enough to remember the post-game get togethers in the first floor classroom at the KAC and our favorite bartender Don McMahon, this occurred during the Mike MacDonald years - when coaches actually met with, knew, and talked to fans and boosters. It was following a tough loss. Mike came in, answered a few questions and then Jim's frustration from the loss took over and he began questioning (in his signature gruff way) many of Mike's decisions throughout the game. Mike stopped him and said, "Hey Jim let's come to an agreement. You don't tell me how to coach basketball and I won't tell you how to fight wars." Everyone, Jim above all others, started cracking up. The mood was lightened and the loss "forgotten".
I had just taken over as the Cage Club president during Tom Parrotta's tenure and he asked me to come to his office one day for lunch. When I arrived, Jim was there too. The three of us walked across the street to the now defunct but legendary Buffalo Pizza Company where they were then making a thin crust NYC style pizza especially for Tom. We had a great conversation, shot ideas off of each other, and Jim shared his vast experience. Tom looked at Jim and said, "What do you think?" - asking if he thought I was the guy for the job. Jim said, "I think he'll be great. This damn thin crust is another story though."
RIP Colonel. You are an all time Great Griff!

This hurts. The Colonel was a mainstay at all Canisius events. I always enjoyed my visits with him. The loss of his wife and the two hip surgeries obviously took their toll. Rest in heavenly peace Sir. 🫡
