Subject: Next Coach

Assuming we make the move, who are some coaching options?

I think we need to be realistic. With the pay and assistant/support staff budget being what it is, facility being near the bottom of the country and there isn’t (at least publicly) an impending upgrade coming and no NIL collective, this certainly isn’t going to be an attractive job in the coaching cycle.

Couple established names that might be desperate enough to need a landing spot:
- Jared Grasso (obviously comes with baggage, but he’s going to need a job)
- Jimmy Patsos loves the MAAC and hasn’t coached in the NIL era, so he’s used to not having that money to work with.

Who else?
Jimmy Baron works at a low level with the Spurs. Do we go back to that tree? I don’t see going after Pat Beilein. Hiring the coach that got fired from your biggest rival for what he did is a bad look. Adam Cohen has been mentioned by some but he definitely makes way more at his current spot and if they win can get a better job.

Have you watched the Grasso video? No not getting another job. Patsos is 57 and hasn't coached in 6 years. He's the guy you want to take this team to the next level? Cohen turned down UB who ended up paying Halcovage 425 in year one. Is Canisius really going to pay Cohen 500+?

Jordan Fee has turned Gannon’s DII program around in just a year. They are 26-2 this season after a bad losing season. He looks like the young coach we need. Unlike the reaches to Parrotta and Marbach in the past, this guy has proven his ability as a head coach.

I would not give up on Patrick Beilein as he has paid heavily for his sins and deserves a second chance.

Forget about Patsos and Grasso as they are bad news.

I love the idea of Fee. 35 years old, energetic, from Erie originally, played at Grove City. Was an assistant at D2 powerhouse Nova Southeastern. As mentioned by Griffine, he has completely turned Gannon around. And they have scored 100+ points in 15 of their wins including 146 against Penn St. DuBois.

I'll throw in Central Connecticut's Patrick Sellers (base salary of $150,000) who has turned that program completely around in 3 years. Won the regular season Northeast Conference title this year. A former Central Connecticut player, however, so he may not have any interest.

Probably not a realistic target and he makes nearly 400k at Norfolk State but Robert Jones wins every year. An NYC guy who has taken them to two NCAA's and an NIT and they're the top seed in this year's MEAC tournament.

I'd still like to see them kick the tires on current George Mason and former Bona assistant Steve Curran - an outstanding recruiter. St. John's assistant Bob Walsh interviewed when Baron was hired - but it would take a lot to pull him away from the Johnnies. I still think Steve DeMeo at Northwestern Florida JC should get a look. NYC guy and UB graduate who was at Iona with Tim Welsh and led NWF to the national championship game last year. NWF is loaded again this season and currently ranked 9th in the nation. Not necessarily the youngest guys but all 3 would absolutely get players.

Not sure what might come of a coaching change if it does happen but more likely to get an assistant at a mid major or a div 2 or 3 head coach, but the true unknown is the division 1 basketball future of the smaller tuition driven schools like Canisius where serious NIL money is just a dream. I see Niagara is undertaking some effort to raise NIL money but an interesting comment I saw is the reminder that a school or NIL collective has to raise the funds every year which would seem to be a daunting task. I'm sure there will be some schools that rise to the challenge that have significant alumni or local support but most will not I believe , personally I don't see a way forward for many current division 1 programs without the creation of a non or limited NIL subdivision within or even outside division 1 as it currently exists for basketball anyway, what ever happened to the idea of a college education being the main ingredient of a scholarship athletes desire to attend a school, probably has been that for many years I guess.

Whoever it is we need to make the job attractive.

That means money. Sorry, Buffalo, NY is not a selling point. Give the new coach the autonomy to make the necessary changes to the program. That means putting a NIL program in place & bring active with the portal.

I doubt we would look at Patrick or Grasso. We live in a world now which lacks forgiveness.

Jimmy Baron would be an interesting hire. He knows the game for sure and would be a great developer of talent.

I doubt that Adam Cohen will come back. He is waiting for the next big job.

He are a few names worth looking at.

Josh Merkel - Randolph Macon
Ben Howlett - West Liberty
Josh Loeffler - Cincinnati assistant
Matt Logie - Montana State

These are 3 we should take a closer look at.

Matt Capell, St Thomas Aquinas- From Buffalo area, protege of Tobin Anderson, has maintained STAC as a D2 power

Phil Martelli Jr, Bryant- From suburban Philly, Paid dues as an assistant for years despite famous coaching father, has Bryant playing well so far

Jordan Fee, Gannon- From Western PA, Mid 30's, In first year at Gannon they are 16-2 and ranked 12th in D2 while averaging 106 PPG. Last year Gannon went 3-23. He could be at the front door of Koessler in under 2 hours.

The school needs to get this right. Hire a search firm like DHL International.

Steal a page of what Marist, Siena & Quinnipiac did.

Jimmy Patsos would be worth the price of admission.

We need to hire Rashawn Stores. He has experience as a D1 player and coach. Great job last year as interim at Manhattan. Walked into an awful situation and did great things in the MAAC. He is the guy we need to hire at Canisius! So many connections to players in NY and surrounding areas. A guy known around all of NY.

Maybe obscure, but Mike Netti, served on former Ohio State coach Holtman’s staff for 12 years at Gardner Webb and Ohio State. From Liverpool, NY, graduated from Syracuse, played D III at Alvernia College. Young, energetic, affordable and hungry to prove himself as a D1 head coach.
Also, I’m still a huge Patrick Beilein supporter.

Canisius doesn’t have the money to put a NIL program in place. Looking at the current situation with Canisius Golden Griffins basketball taking into
account the Griffs attendance and the lack of money in the basketball program. If it was my call which it isn’t. I would just hire Mike McDonald back and call it a day. I think Mike McDonald is the best Canisius University can do considering the budget constraints and the lack of a Division I basketball facility that is who I would hire. Give Mike McDonald a second chance he is experienced loves the area and has coached all over locally in college basketball. Mike McDonald can recruit locally kids that are our own Western New York players that want to be here in Western New York that you want to root for. I get it Canisius alums will hate the idea but Mike McDonald is just as experienced as the other coaches mentioned in my opinion. Go Griffs! Let’s Go Buffalo

It's really not your call? You're wrong on three things - which isn't surprising. One, Canisius has already paid athletes NIL money and it will grow. Two, Mike's good. He has no interest in returning. And lastly, you honestly think you can win in the MAAC with local kids? Good Lord.

Buffalo Sports Fan, it's time to move on.

Mac, is a nice guy and is content down the street. When he was here the program was coming off an all time high and it stalled for almost 10 years.

His record was well below .500. There is no way the school is going to reach out to him.
