Re: Unintended Consequences of NIL & Transfer Portal -- Buffalo Super Fan, Fri, March 29 2024, 18:22:33
The players should get the money. Look players at the factory schools have been paid for years with benefits. At least it’s out in the open instead of shady friends of the program and a duffel bag with cash. I like the NIL because it’s making the schools like St Bonaventure Bonnies stand out. Canisius and Niagara if they can’t keep up absolutely Canisius University should drop down to Division 2 or Division 3. Canisius has an area bigger than Olean but they are there own worse enemy refusing to change. UB Bulls were stubborn like that and they got some 5 win action. The difference between Canisius and UB is UB is starting to understand this is reality the new landscape of sports. UB is working on NIL for the players. Canisius University from what I by the tone on this board they don’t it. How this ends for a team like Canisius is basically the rest of college basketball will move along where Canisius just exists and basically is Division I symbolically but in reality they were just passed by the rest of the schools with NIL. Could Canisius basketball be bigger and better than St Bonaventure yes but there has to be a want to and I don’t see that with Canisius Golden Griffins basketball. They need $80 million dollars just to build a Division I basketball facility. I talk about Broadway Arena Canisius buying the building for $1 dollar from the city of Buffalo. Then build a 5,000 to 6,000 seat Basketball/Hockey arena for both Griffs basketball and Griffs hockey why continue to pay Terry Pegula at Harbor Center? It’s not on campus or even in the neighborhood of Canisius University. You use Federal and State brown field credits/blight building that is historical. It’s the oldest existing hockey arena in the United States. So you get heritage status to receive more tax breaks. Then you got to fine a partner for naming rights. Then the rest Canisius University would have to fund raise and then borrow the rest of the money. That is a major lift but it is do able if there is a want to. I just don’t see a want too unfortunately. Hope that answers your question about the state of the Big 4 basketball and NIL. Niagara all depends on if Niagara Falls builds the talked about arena up there to replace the loss of the Niagara Falls Convention Center. I haven’t heard much more in the past year. I don’t know if there was a funding problem or if the project got cancelled don’t know in my opinion. Go Griffs! Let’s Go Buffalo
