MTE = Multi-Team Event. Typically a 3 or 4 team round robin deal (my understanding is Canisius will be in a 3 team event) with no real "winner" like a traditional tournament would have. The games do not count against the number of OOC games a team can schedule. Their games in Montreal last year against Wofford, Bowling Green, and Western Kentucky were part of an MTE.
The "third" assistant could not be announced because he was and contractually continued to be an employee of the state of (blank) until June 15. Anything - including his announced "next job" - could not be made public without him sacrificing significant benefits. The guy has a ton of experience and is possibly JC's most trusted colleague. Will be the number one assistant and is top flight.

Yes they can play in an MTE each year - just not the same one in consecutive years - and unless something has changed, a team can play 28 regular season games and a 3 game MTE or 29 games and a 2 game MTE.

Do most teams schedule the maximum number of games? It seems like the small conferences like the MAAC could use some of those games as big money games

99.9% of the time yes. Why wouldn't they? There are some odd glitches from time to time - like UB bailing on the Canisius game last year leaving Canisius one game short of the max. But it should never happen.
