The Dog Days of Summer ( July 3- August 11) are waning, and there hasn't been a posting here since July 25th. So here goes something sort of related to CU basketball. BG was at KAC on April 11th waiting for Jim Christian's press conference to start. A fellow, apparently a member of the Administration at CU, was standing nearby and he struck up a conversation. BG asked if there were any plans for a Capital Campaign to raise some funding for Canisius. He answered it was already under way in the Quiet Phase with discussions with potential doners. The public phase has not yet been formally publicized. The goal is $150 million (MM). BG replied something like, "holy shit". Recently NU has wrapped up the completion of a $130 MM campaign, so that exclamation can be deleated. Also recently CU seems to have reconsidered the demolition of Lyons Hall, loudly announcing that by taking its insurance provider to court. The Powers That Be, lead by President Steve, are surely looking to a solid future for Alma Mater.Word has one third of the $150 MM going to the Endowment. With $100 MM ---? How to be used? No doubt properly completing Science Hall, but what else? Demolition of "The Tootsie Roll" and proper landsacping for the front of the campus? How far does $150 MM go these days? Let's spend the remaining Dog Days keeping Griff busy with our posters ideas and responses here. Let's Go Griffs, (and soon Bills). St. Ignatius (Iggy) and St. Peter Canisius, please pray (a lot).

The school is always actively raising funds. I wouldn't put too much stock in a dollar amount or timeline, but a capital campaign does make sense. Canisius is due for one. It's been over 12 years since the last one.

You’re correct about the quiet phase of the campaign. I doubt the Churchill will removed. I like the idea of Lyons Hall being saved. There is also the open space where the parking ramp was. Lots of discussion about using that space for practice fields & potentially looking to grab some land from the Medaille same for athletic space. The school needs to attract more students who don’t need so much financial aid. This strategy hasn’t helped us to drive enrollment or annual giving. Go Griffs!

A refesher course, courtesey of Wikipedia. The first comprehensive capital campaign was by President Cooke,S.J. in 2000 and raised $39 MM. His second campaign in 2007 raised $66 MM. There has been none since. The annual Giving Day raises some $$, but are very modest in comparison to those and President Steve Stoute's $150 MM. The completion of Science Hall in an up to date manner should be at the top of the list, IMO. Also the parking ramp site should be used for buildings, e.g. the Business School, possibly a faculty offices building (after Chuhchill is gone). Acquiring some of the Medaille property is interesting, maybe the dorm space next to the CU property could be converted to those kind of uses. Canisius isn't "land locked" any more.

Hurley should have never sold the properties on Florida Street. So dumb! Koessler could have desperately used that land. Move the business school to Lyons Hall. The parking ramp space will be green space for now. Science Hall has been a huge drain when it came to fund raising. They need to get that done. How long has it been? The school needs to drive enrollment from outside WNY. We’re everybody’s safety school. The school needs to change that by making it a destination with the most compelling majors & faculty. It can be done. Go Griffs!

I was also shocked, and disappointed when Hurley sold the property on Florida St. I was hoping that at one point Canisius would own all of the houses along that block, and the Demske could possibly add a track, or improve the baseball and softball facilities. Apparently, he needed the money to demo the parking ramp. Go Griffs!!!

So short sighted on Hurley. He should have at least picked up the phone & reach to boosters to secure the housing. This was typical during the tenure. No vision, just tactics. What could have been. President Steve has a vision & needs our support. Go Griffs!
