Sometimes good leaders are required to make difficult decisions. I expect this is one of those times.

Can't lose your faculty. Sounds like some communication issues. Never good.

If they want their job then work with the President. If not, then go. Good luck finding a job like what they currently have in WNY. SMH Go Griffs!

[> Re: Canisius faculty to hold protest on proposed $15M in cuts, low morale -- Canisius can lose those faculty though..., Thu, October 24 2024, 16:30:35

The people upset about faculty treatment represent just under 10% of all faculty. Their student supporters represent just over 1% of students.

Would it be better to have more funding, a pay freeze lifted, and more staffing? Absolutely! However, the overwhelming majority of the campus endures that discomfort because they care about the school and its students.

The vocal minority is subset of a subset that doesn't fundraise, doesn't recruit, doesn't pursue research, and doesn't obtain grant funding. They want to do the same amount of work, while everyone else tries to do more with less.

They have a legal right to unionize, organize, protest, etc., but they're not making anything easier or better for anyone else. They're doing some selfish grandstanding. They've chosen to leave spots open on the Faculty Senate, because they don't want to do the real work of making Canisius better. Canisius has an incredibly approachable president and his one mistake was not letting students to the State of the University speech. Grow up.

Their counterparts across the nation have far more pressure to show ROI. Most Canisius faculty are safe teaching three sections per semester, getting decent student reviews, working about 20 hours in their office weekly, and serving on a random committee. That's an amazing gig, and the overwhelming majority of faculty realize this.

There's a pithy comment, "do you still believe in Saint Steve?" Hell yes, I do believe in him. Stoute is trying to end deficits and fix the problems that his predecessor ignored (generally, under the direction of trustees). He's trying to set up Canisius for the future, and these particular faculty are too selfish to see that.

I will never understand why Canisius has not been able to better position itself as quality institution in the heart of a mid-size city. What I do understand are the multi-year deficits. Some colleges have simply closed, while others simply kick the can down the road. This president chooses to make a stand to deal with the fiscal problems. Sooner or later, it was bound to happen. I feel for the students, faculty, and staff, but someone needed to do something to ensure that Canisius is around for decades to come.

After Demske & Cooke, the past President didn’t run it like a business. Let President Steve fix this mess. St. Peter Canisius pray for us. Go Griffs!

Historically canisius was so dependent on students coming out of catholic high schools, particularly diocese of buffalo schools which basically don't exist anymore and the school administration was probably late to react to the changing demographics here and in the northeast, basically everything that led to Canisius attracting students that led it to becoming a somewhat highly rated academic school have been on a long term decline. I always felt it never seemed we did much to promote ourselves or to progressively address changes occurring including on the athletic front . Canisius still has many good majors and programs to build on and attract students from far and wide. An aggressive approach to sports and better success on the basketball court has to be part of any growth plan it would seem.

You need a mix of kids that can pay the full ride. Also too many local kids. You need to market beyond WNY. Go Griffs!
