Subject: Now, where was BG?
Ah,yes: First, there was an interruption on Voy since about the 12th advising BG; "Your connection is not private---". The Wifes' laptop had the same message. Anyone else run into that? Mine is finally gone today, and Voy is back.Well, Jim and his Staff are sure getting a full recruiting period under their belts and appear to be making the most of it. The three Freshmen signed to date look to be really "good gets", perhaps the best in years.(Remember "The Four Freshmen [50's-60'S version]? They could really sing! But, BG is digressing). And there are a good number of other potential Griffs being recruited, as apppears from what BG missed while interrupted.
We have three Freshmen in the 2024 recruiting class two of whom are being Red Shirted and none of whom who should be tossed aside: Alonso Easterling (RS), Carter Jackson (RS) and Evan van der Plas, who has seen some playing time. Now that we are so many players short and he is one of the 7 or 8 able to play, will we see more of him? Jackson, from Griffs' reporting of his H.S. games, sounds like a good D-1 player. Maybe he needed some work on his defense or something? Or maybe Jim wanted to give him an extra year as a Griff once things were getting settled down this season.
Then there is Easterling. He makes BG think about two Little Three coaches going back a bit (OK alot). One at NU and one at CC (n/k/a CU). The late Frank Layden is the NU coach-late 60's-early 70's. He was a good and funny coach. His coaching career ended up in the NBA. In the humor department he is credited with saying:"You can't coach height". Easterling has plenty of that at 6'-11". But at 210 lbs.he should attract some attention in the dietitions room and the weight room in a RS season and the following Spring and Summer and hard work in the gym and attentive coaching, with that he could become an excellent D-1 player. If he's got the stuff to work at it.
By the way, to the "Youngsters", a little more Layden history. All Griff fans should know that he recruited a player to NU, a 5'-9" guard named Calvin Murphy. Not so tall? You can look him up in the NBA Hall of Fame. (BG digresses again).
The CC coach is Nick Macarchuck who recruited and coached a Freshman (80's ish) who needed alot of coaching. He was (and still is) from Canada. His name is Mike Smrek. He played in an exibition game for H.S. grads before his Canisius career. He was a 7 footer (height). As to feet, the game was at the old AUD. There was a good attendence. In the warmups the first thing was a layups line. Mike took a couple of bounces with the ball, as he was going towards the basket. He then tripped over his own feet. "And The Crowd Went Wild". He got up and continued with a smile, as BG recalls. Don't recall if he made the layup. Doesn't matter
He worked hard with excellent coaching at Canisius. He became really good. It was during the time the NBA had fewer teams and several more rounds in its draft. He was the first pick in the second round by the Chicago Bulls and part of the big men known as "The Chicago Skyline". He became an LA Lakers and was there for most of his solid career supporting one of the best of the big men ever, a guy from NY City who became Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Mike owms two NBA Championship Rings.
Nick has often been heard to say: "The only thing I did wrong with Mike is I should have Red Shirted him". BG has not asked him why, but imagines it's probably something about being a first round draft choice.
GB is all caught up. Go Griffs!

Technical issues with voy. Affected different browsers longer than others. All should be good now for everyone.
I think Jackson can be a very solid MAAC guard. Actually the biggest thing is improving his perimeter shooting. He's a real good defender and JC told me he was their best rebounding guard in the pre-season.
Easterling is skilled and athletic. Obviously has to gain some strength and weight. If nothing else, I think he can definitely provide some rim protection next year.
Don't forget Will Scott. He struggled in the 7 games he played before getting hurt, but the coaches were very high on him.
