Subject: Now what?

The Buffalo News this AM tells the world three Big Four programs will opt into compensation for college athletes and one won't. The one is CU. Anyone know what's up next?

There's not enough recurring revenue at NU or UB to sustain revenue sharing. Bona has a decent shot because of their history.

Once upon a time a student athlete named Bob Lanier from Benett High School wanted to go no place but Canisius College. But we wouldn't accept him. So he went to Bona. And we're still trying to live it down.

Respectfully, I'm beyond tried of rehashing decisions from 50 years ago. Lanier wasn't a Griff. Canisius didn't join the Eastern Eight. I don't care about any of that.

Niagara and UB barely have enough revenue to sustain what little they have. Their staffs are revolving doors. It's not going to magically improve if they redistribute some of their little revenue to student-athletes. St. Bonaventure is going to struggle with the new directives from the A-10 to spend outside of basketball, but they're positioned better for this because of Woj and their alumni culture.

The best decision would be for the MAAC to make a conference-wide agreement. The second-best decision is to wait a year and see what happens.

Let’s see what this coaching staff does. I would love to see 1 or 2 more wins but that looks doubtful. They will be busy, lots to fix. My biggest issue with this team was the lack of depth. Go Griffs!

BG hasn't seen the whole piece. There's some interesting info on the NU site. It looks CU is handling this the right way at this point IMO. Hope we don't lose any of of our recruits. Would any of those at any D1 school who are coming in as Freshmen right out of high or prep school be eligible for $$ without playing a single D1 game to begin with?

I am not surprised that CU opted out, and I also doubt they will seriously re-evaluate next year as the 15 million cut is a two-year effort. UB has state money, and if they want to remain viable in football, they have no choice. Niagara is a head-scratcher but I suppose sharing some revenue is better than nothing. I am certain that some of our better players will move on for a payday, regardless of the amount.

It said that they would not to opt into the House settlement for the 2025-26 school year. Bill Maher said it was the most prudent thing to do to take the year and make sure how it all shakes out. If the settlement is approved, they will select the best course of action.

College athletics is all over the place. The dust will settle at some point. Sadly, it's all about money.

Time will tell on what this means for the Big 4 schools.

Go Griffs!

If we drop to D3 none of the House decision would apply? With a 15 million dollar deficit I'm worried.

President Steve wants to grow Canisius University. He and the other POWERS THAT BE have been working to rid CU of the deficit issue since last Fall as BG understands the matter. It seems their philosophy is you have to tear down before you can build up. BG has also read in several places that our President also belives that D1 athletics are an important part of growing the student population. BG was told by someone "in the know" at an event last Spring that Canisius has under way the silent part of a $150 MM development drive, that part being discussions with potential sources who or which could be significent donors. CU at one point was going to demolish Lyons Hall after the 2022 storm damage to it. Now CU is litigating with the insurance carrier for a more fair damage amount to restore the building. BG doesn't think D3 is part of the picture. Has anyone heard anything to the contrary?

From what I’m hearing they’re off to a good start. They need to settle the Lyons Hall situation & do something with that property. Selling it wouldn’t be smart. Put the Wehle Busineess School there vs. burying it in Science Hall. Go Griffs!

And the insurance claim has been settled favorably for Canisius. The $150 million goal is real and $25 million greater than Bona and Niagara set in thei capital campaigns. And,yes, we are committed to staying and succeeding in D-I.
