Author: M'att and Ashertith
Subject: And another....
In reply to: W'ren and Datoth, R'jari and Maeroth 's message, "A... Brown?" on 00:10:32 09/12/06 Tue

Ashertith was really a rather surprising animal.

When he’d hatched, he’d been little bigger than the blues he’d accompanied into the word – and the less kind of the weyr-dwellers had been inclined to write him off into the lower category, as if his colour had been, although an unfortunate mistake, a mistake nonetheless. Not exactly the kind of thing that is designed to make a young dragon feel happy with himself, even if he does have a rider who assures him every day that not a more perfect dragon ever set foot upon the soil.

But maybe the doubt surrounding him wasn’t such a bad thing, after all. Because when someone thinks you’re below average, the most natural thing to do is try and prove them wrong – and almost through force of will Ashertith had grown in the years since his hatching into a dragon worthy of his colour. Not the largest brown around by a long shot, but not as small as a blue; something that fitted with him most admirably. He was able to walk with his tail held high, satisfied at last that, though it had taken him a while, he had exceeded expectations.

I’m bored.

Well, most expectations, at least. He still had a rather short attention span for a brown. M’att didn’t reply, so he tried again.

I said, I’m bored.

‘I heard you the first time. What do you expect me to do?’

Oh, I don’t know. You could take me flying, or come for a swim…

The sixth sense that male dragons have stopped him short, and he lifted his brown head slowly, sniffing he air. Something was out of place – something was wrong.

Well, not wrong, exactly, more…different. The air had changed. There was a note of anticipation among the other brown and bronze dragons that he had witnessed before only when a female was about to go into heat. At once excitement filled his dragon chest – a chance to prove himself! He could try this, and prove that he could at least keep going in a proper flight and not drop out before the end! Admittedly, he’s already proved this before, having chased more than one green since he reached full growth, but this was yet another time to fly!

However, in his triumph, Ashertith neglected to do two very essential things. First, he didn’t tell his rider of his ambitions.

And second (and possibly most important of all) he didn’t check which dragon was going to fly.

So it came to be that he was making his way to the bowl, already feeling the hormones coursing into his young veins, when he finally realised just which dragon was going to take to the skies that day. But it was too late to turn back now – once a male gets going, particularly a young male who has little in the way of rational thinking. At his first sight of Mylanith he was torn completely – her radiance called to him, but the innate programming of his race told him to turn tail and flee, because he’d be hopelessly outnumbered.

But since when does any sex-crazed young male just give up like that?

M’att….she’s so…. Ashertith’s muddled brain couldn’t find a word for the queen’s glowing form. It was beyond his powers of speech.

‘Who?’ M’att asked suspiciously, before he was hit with the full force of his dragon’s lust. It was difficult to resist the urge to just jump out of the window to get to the flying air, but after a few deep breaths he managed to get himself sufficiently under control that he could sprint to the bowl.

Ashertith was crouched ready to spring, every muscle tightly clenched as he growled low at the other competitors. When his rider arrived to join the crowd of young men at the side of the grounds, he didn’t make any reaction save to lash his tail at the human – not that M’att was able to notice anything at this point beyond Talla/Mylanith, who he gazed at unashamedly, mouth half-open as his blue eyes unfocused.

‘Wait. Not yet.’ He somehow managed to caution his beast. ‘Oh shards, not yet…’
