The question I pose on Stewart is not whether he can cut the mustard any more or not, rather, what should the selectors do if he declares himself unavailable for the next overseas tour?

I can't imagine they would drop him from next summer's Ashes series, but I don't think he can say "I'm only not available for touring" and still expect to be picked for series at home.

The ECB should pull out all the stops to make sure he continues to tour, but if he refuses, then it's time for someone else at the end of next summer. But who? I don't think Chris Read is good enough on either side of the stumps. The emergence of White as a Test quality all rounder helps solve the problem of balance. If Freddie Flintoff could sort his back out and justify a slot at number 6, you could potentially carry a wicket-keeper who isn't quite up to the mark with the bat.

My personal view is that Atherton will pack up at the end of the Ashes summer (though I hope I'm wrong) so the Test XI in twelve months time could look something like this:

Vaughan, Trescothick, Hussain, Thorpe, Solanki, Flintoff, White, Nixon, Giles, Caddick, Gough.

Any other theories?
