Date Posted: 928830414PDT SUBJECT: # 4216: Stripers the freshwater x-plant taken from Saltfish Surfboard Submitted by Tony (209.30.10.14) from TEXAS on 6/5/99 11:28:00 AM I read with interest all you lucky guys who get to tackle stripers in the surf and sounds back east. I made a trip from Boston over to Block island and saw some of the old pictures from the turn of the century. What amazing fish! Went up the entire seaboard all the way to Maine and back. Your fisheries people seem to be doing a good job in recovery of your stocks on Striper. I guide parties weekly here in Texas for the landlocked version. We have a great time in the early spring on topwater bite, then switch to large gizzard shad freelining them. We are starting to see a few being caught in Trinity Bay here in Texas, at one time here around the turn of the century there was a commercial fishery for them. Maybe someday they will have a better chance at sea run fish here. Our average day in freshwater consists of 30-40 fish per day 24-32". Freshwater limits in Texas are generous at 5 /day on all lakes except for Texoma where 15 may be retained. Currently our freshwater record is 54# and the official salt record is 28#. I have caught several in the 30# range in fresh. I prefer catching the fish in 18-20# range for the fight they put up. As for the post are you missing the boat? Don't think so. This is the closest to saltwater fishing i get other then a couple trip to port "a" a year. I'm leaving tomorrow to a to port "a" and hope to do some serious fishing next week. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/5/99 1:13:00 PM Walkin' Jack (134.163.248.80) from TEXAS says Texoma stripers Got a bunch of family that live about 15 minutes from Texoma and I've caught stripers below the Denison Dam and out on the lake with a guide. Never caught any in saltwater (YET) but I've had a blast with the freshwater variety. I love the way they fight, too. They may not be the toughest fighter around but they fight ALL THE WAY IN! I can't remember a time when one quit on me. Most of the ones I've taken were in the 15 to 25 inch class. You ought to see those guys with their long rods and HUGE pincil poppers work the dam when they are releasing water, now that is when you see 'em take some freshwater LARGE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/5/99 11:12:00 PM Tony (209.30.10.14) from TEXAS says Red river fishery This is where I began guiding for striper in the early eighties. (before the game thiefs took over) We had many days of 20-30# fish using skipjacks (blue backed herring) of around 1-1/2 # freelining them down the river. I had one client who caught a 38# in 1982. We also caught many large fish on the lake before the biomass was crowded with the 18 -25" fish. I still guide on PK,(prettiest lake in Texas and still the numbers and size champ) I haven't heard of a 52# from the lake, although I know the outlaw Shane Davies who got his rear in a sling for his illegal activities below the dam.( If he just wouldn't use those rainbows.),( He was also disbarred from the Texas Striper Association) At any rate stripers are why I became a pull addict, also why I keep looking for bigger and better pulls. Stand up Tuna next year I hope. Oh well in the meantime I am leaving for POC tomorrow night for a week on the coast, should be able to get in some personal time and cure the shakes I have now. The right arm and hand have developed a noticeable twitch. I have been hitting the Tarpon hard in front of Pass Cavallo for the last 4 years, (best kept secret on the coast). Good luck to all on the coast this week. Tony Hughes, Lateral Line Guide Services -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/6/99 5:34:00 AM Jim Day (216.192.56.45) from CALIFORNIA says Good to here from all you Texoma Guy's God you guy's got me homesick: every year I try to plan to be back in Texas for the may june run at the Dennison dam, but I never seem to make it. I fished Dennison Damn heavily in the early Eighty's. At the time I was going to college down in Sherman and fishing catfish on the river during the summer months. For a living if you can believe that, I "camped" in an old blue chevy pickup. I did'nt make any money (50 cents a pound for blues) but had a blast fishing the stripers. At the time I released everything under 10 lbs. Evan at that for three years in a row I counted over 100 stripers over Ten and missed the state record by less then a pound twice. My best was only 36 1/2 but thats nothing compaired with what they've caught since. There's nothing like casting Pencils from the wall. I've given up on my old 15ftr but still keed a few surf rods around for nostalgia. When I start throwing drilled redfins for calico bass ( the closest thing out here) all the guy's start giveing me weird looks.I tell you enjoy it while you can I have fished all over the country and there is no better plug fishing any where then Texoma. I wonder if any of you guy's know any of my old fishing buddy's: Mike Cobb was a terrible cuss but I've fished with him, along with: JT, JC and Brain Boyd. If you know any of those guys get them to drop by my west coast web page and drop me a message. Brain had a brother Eddie who was pretty good to. Havent heard from any of those guy's in years. I'm now out here in LA. It's were I can make a living. Some good saltwater fishing out here. I've caught some nice Tuna and Threshers. Theres some strippers but no good river fishing, just not enough rain. Hey if you guys ever get out here drop me a line and we'll go get some Mako's . As to possum Kindom: fished it and had some good luck for Bass and even some walleye they stocked way back when. Always liked the cliffs around Hell's Gate beatiful place to fish. Tried the Dam once to small for my taste. Any buddy fish Grandburry damn. Now thats near where I grew up, caught quite a few stripers there..... Well enough nostalgia for now... Hey and drop by my website and say hello. the address is....http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/FISHTEK/ or drop by my message board at...http://www.voy.com/318/ Good to hear those fish are still there, I tell you I still have dreams about them. Tight lines Jim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/6/99 10:17:00 AM C.Kim (216.14.0.24) from OKLAHOMA says Denison Dam Fishing I have been fishing the Red River right below the Denison Dam one or two days a week starting April 7, except this past week. (I just came back from my saltwater fishing trip.) So far, this area has been good for blue catfishing but not for stripers yet. When stripers spawned in late April and May, the lake didn't have enough water (because of the last year's drought), so the dam has not opened the flood gates. However, the Texas side generators have been on since March 22, 6 or 18 hours a day. The lake water level has been a little over the conservation level since mid March (the current level is 619.5 feet) and I expect that a single heavy rain in the near future will force to open the flood gates. Anyway, we have caught a number of large blue catfish this year in that area. The largest I caught this year was a 32 pounder. I have seen a 50 pounder caught right next to me. Another person who fished next to me caught a total of 192 pounds (10 blues) in 8 hours. A side note, about my saltwater fishing this past week. Fished the Galveston Fishing Pier with my 12 year old son 15 hours a day, Monday through Friday. The most active fish were sharks and gafftopsail catfish. A number of them were caught at the pier T-head. We also caught a red drum (41", 30 lbs), a back drum (33 lbs), and some sheepshead. The black drum was caught by my son while he was trying to catch sheepshead by using a little treble hook and a live shrimp. The fish was released. There was no sign of speckled trout, probably because of the muddy water. The best day was Thursday, June 3, when the green water covered the pier area. WJ, please check my e-mail. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6/7/99 12:30:00 PM Russ Smith (207.223.224.51) from CALIFORNIA says Freshwater stripers from a float tube I have recently started fishing alot from a float tube at San Luis Reservoir in Los Banos, CA for stripers. I have all the surfgear and fish that way there too but when it's windy it's actually a lot easier to get them from a tube. The wind tends to blow bait into coves and against the dam, so to cast from shore you're casting with a big wind in your face(it gets 30-40MPH this time of year alot). Saturday I was tubing there in about 40 feet of water marking a bunch of fish 15-20 feet deep with my Fishing Buddy II fish finder, when somethinb bumped my Yozuri Emperor Minnow. Then it hit and the fight was on, turned out to be a 33 inch striper who snagged the lure on the back of his head. What a fight, using a lightweight Fenwick spinrod(6'6" long rated for 1/2 ounce lure and 12 pound line) with a small bass size spinning reel and 17 pound fireline. The fish had wrapped the line around himself so I had to unravel him and then fight him back to the tube 2 more times before landing him. What a thrill in a tube, he swam right off so the snagging didn't seem to harm him. There are guys who tube there every weekend with 9 weight flyrods(some use 7 weights) and they've caught so many 30-50 pounders it would blow your mind. Several flyrod world records were set there and most came from a float tube. Mine was about 15 pounds, I can't imagine the fight a 50 pounder would put up in a tube.
