Date Posted: 930153215PDT The following just in from Bob Endreson on Oahu(with regard to the Bill to ban the shark' fin trade in Hawaii): Subject: Send in your support NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 13:01:51 -1000 Thank you for support for a prohibition on shark finning at last weeks Western Pacific Council meeting. Although the Council did not take any action to prohibit finning and to move towards the full utilization of sharks, we most certainly did bring the issue to the front burner and feel the stage may now be set for State action and/or pre-emption by the Secretary of Commerce. It's clear that the current makeup of the Council does not give recreational fishermen, conservationists or small boat commercial interests any representation at all on the Western Pacific Fisheries Council. We are writing to you today, as we are very concerned about the Council nomination process which we understand is nearing final review. Secretary of Commerce Daley will make his final decision in the next day or so and Commercial Interests are lobbying some of Hawaii's Congressional Delegation hard, to keep existing Council members. That should say it all! If the existing Council members are supported by commercial interests, then how can they represent us and initiate sound fisheries management? The Western Pacific Council has been very unbalanced for a number of years and the small boat interests, conservation groups and recreational sectors of the fishery in Hawaii have had little to no representation. After repeated requests to support a ban of shark finning and an endorsement for full utilization of sharks here in the Western Pacific, the Council members who supposedly represent small boat/recreational interests have turned their backs on us once again. What should be clear is the support for Mr. Farm and Mr. Morioka being generated from the commercial sector. How can we expect the Council to be balanced when political figures are influenced by the commercial interests who lobby for recreational seats on the Council? It's clear to everyone involved in fisheries and it is certainly a slap in the face to those of us who are merely looking for a level playing field. We hope that you will Email or Fax the Secretary and Ms. Dalton (SEE BELOW) and support Ms. Linda Paul and Mr. Edwin Ebisui as they do reflect the recreational, conservation and small boat concerns of the State of Hawaii and are the preferred choices of the Governor of Hawaii. Mr. Farm and Mr. Morioka have let us down on the Council by their actions and we feel that the only way to have our concerns about resource management represented properly is through a change in the Council members themselves. They did not support us on the Shark Finning issue nor have they supported us in other issues of equal importance to these sectors of the fishery.
