I read an article a few years back by a big Mako east coast specialist. (the guy had a number of 800lb plus fish under his belt) He said that big Mako's hang outside the 1000 fathom curve. Sounds like the Santa Cruz basin to me. I think you should recosider the freediving in the chum thing. Big Mako's like big prey. A known hunting Technique is to hang low in the water column then rush up slamming the prey in one swift motion. This is the way whites attack large prey such as elephant seals and Mako's attack sword fish. I think this is for their own protection. A large animal such as a swordfish or elephant seal could inflict considerable damage on the shark. Thus they attack quick to avoid damage and possible resistance. You can see where I'm going here. Big whites and Mako's are all too rare in the chumline, chances are you'd never run into one, but if you did it would probabluy hit you without warning due to their instinctual big prey response. Of coarse that said: if you ever want someone to dive with count me in. I once wanted to jump in the water to watch our trolling spread. My idea was to hang on the surface and watch the baits go by as Mike made a few passes. He told me in no uncertain terms I was acting crazy again. I've always wanted to build a cage and check out the chumline sounds like my kind off fun. Tight lines Jim [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
