Hey Jim:

I gather this guy Russel is some kind of lobbiest for the Commercial industry. Sustainability is not an "option" it's life. Non-susatinable fishing practices should not be allowed period. I love how he quotes the catch statistics as if this is conservation in action, more likely this is a good reflection of depletion of fish stocks. It amazes me that they keep increasing regulation of Rec fisherman yet allow these kind of catch quotas for the commercials. 4 to 6 large coastals per hundred hook set!! Beach Bum is lucky to catch that many large coastals in a year. 3 million pounds a year what a slaughter.

On a different note anyone hear of the book "The perfect storm". After it's great success a sister book has been published. It details the trials and glorys of a Swordfish longline boat that was captained by a women. She has written (with help) a book very favorable to the longline industry. It's become rather popular even in liberal circles, mainly due to a Psuedo feminist under current about how difficult it is to be a woman in this man controlled work field. I've heard her interveiwed several times on public radio. She claims that there are plenty of swordfish in the ocean. That the 50,000 lb limit is just unfair and gives foreign interests the advantage in a highly competetive buisness. She neglects to mention the fact that the average size Atlantic sword they catch averages a mere 47lbs. I guess that means 1000 swords on the deck per two week trip. More than any recreational angler could possibly catch in a lifetime.

Thanks for the info Jim

Tight lines Jim
