"Wednesday tuna fishing"

Report 27th 425 Coronado's etc...

Single Jig strike just north of the 425 didn't hang.

Wide open Barry's five miles north of the Coronado's.

It was a very lumpy day. Here's what it looked like at one of the quiter moments.

It's wet for a reason

Full story:

If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen, at least thats what I was telling myself all day.

Got a late start due to oversleeping. The good side here is I got some sleep for a change and was in better shape for it. Down side is I got to Shelter about 6:30, just a little late for me. Hey: at least I missed traffic on the road and at the ramp

On the way down I stopped and checked everything. The above deck tank was leaking out the vent because it was over filled. Long story here but I needed some gas cans for another trip on another boat and put all my gas (sightly too much) in the tank. So I closed the vent and headed on down. The ride was perfect great sunrise over O-side.

Truck ran great.

Put in, fired up, headed full throttle toward the bait barge. Instantly the left engine boggs down.

Now I had just rebuilt the carb so my first suspect is a given. Checked everything and it looked ok. Pumped the gas fired up got bait then made it to the outside marker before it bogged down again.
AAAAArrrrGGGGGgggg....

Now I'm not perfect: sometimes I'm right on sometimes not. Since the same carb had given me trouble last trip (on the other engine) I figured it must be the culprit. It would run then stop, sounded like a float sticking closed (unikely but possible) pulled the carb checked the float, and it was fine. Frustrated I decide to head into the bay and anchor untill I worked it out. Crawing over the full tank ( to get to the anchor locker)it came to me. I never opened the d@mn vent. Almost two hours wasted.

By now the wind had come up. The original idea was to head to 425 then fish either north or south depending on the conditions. If the forcast had been right with 10 knots winds dying in the afternoon I might of gone even further south. As is the 425 was down the trough so I figured why not. Usually I come back in white caps not head out through them.

The run to the 425 was fine 16 knots the whole way. Ran along side a 21 striper most of the way. Of four boats on the 425 mine was by far the smallest. Conditions were rough and it was hard to fish except downswell. I had one strike about noon. Hit a Mean Joe Green Bigeye Zucker and burnt a few feet but never hooked up. It's a big jig so no mackeral..

By 1 pm I was ready to can it. Too rough period and definatey too rough to work up to the 371 then 302 as planned. I had two choices as I saw it. Either troll straight back to Point Loma or try the Coranodo's for yellows. You never know it might flatten out and I'd still be in the area. Hindsights 20/20: I chose the latter but later regretted my decision.

Metered some fish at the south island. 75 feet at 150 and close in 20-50 at fifty on the lee. Nothing wanted to go. Saw a 3/4 day working just south. Trolling and stopping for extended bait stops. Cosidered running out there to check. If a 3/4 got albies yesterday thats where they go them. I figured Barry's which is still my bet. Almost went out there but didn't want to extend the ride back home.

I considered anchoring for more waiting but finally decided it was time to take my medicine. About four boats were milling around just looking at the slop, when I headed out I got some looks.
I could just make eight knots with both engines but it was really hard on both me and the boat. Ridicuously wet with some heavy slamming. I decide to troll with one engine, why fight for eight when you can leasurly (by compairison) do six. 5 miles up the line I hooked up a good barry.

I was happy to see him to say the least. About twenty of his brothers followed him to the boat. I threw some chum and they boiled. Two more on a tady 45 and I was ready to go. I threw some chum to watch the fun then took off. Hurray for Barricuda!!

Made the harbor about 5:00 pulled up outside the moorings anchored and went to sleep.

I woke up about seven, to see a regatta of saiboats off my stern. Weird saiors down there. Plenty of wind but most had up just their main up running along with thier motor. Looked like fun ( lots of girls ) but a weird way to sail.

Decided to fish till dark. Up near the barge I ran into a wide open sand bass bite. Even managed a short butt.

What can I say:

It was rough and still no tuna on my boat. I had company though. Lots of guys in much bigger rigs grumbling about the roughest day of the year. One rig (25 ft) that fished the same area litery had a fight over the gas bill.

I saw only one boat with fish. Limited on the 390 with four guys. The skipper of the 25 wellcraft said it was realy really nasty out there. Good fishing but hard to find and hook up in that kind of water.

I guess it's no real consolation but you know misery loves company. I was taking to one guy and told him about the barries, he actualy got jealous. I realy appreciated his "Well at least you got something" comment.

I guess it was an OK day for me. I'd rather get a saltwater slap in the face all day then fight traffic. The boat ran great (once I gave it fuel) and I certainy never fealt unsafe, and with all that slow trolling I ony burned seventeen gallons of gas, so I guess I can afford to go again

All and a not a bad day on the water.

You know what they say: a bad day of fishing beats a good day of work

Tight ines Jim
