Subject: etymology of a "planet"
In reply to: bc 's message, "star size comparison ..." on 23:31:11 04/20/11 Wed

planet ...
"to wander" ...
from the Greek (asteres) "planetai"...
- "wandering (stars)"...
from "planasthai"...
- "to wander"...

Kinda makes you feel a bit infinitesimal doesn't it!?!
Think of the life of a nematode. Someone needs to take it from largest living thing to the smallest. It reminds me of Loren Eisley.

Thanks for the trip through the universe.

yep LauraG ...
seeing the last in the row of comparisons made me feel about "this big" ...
sort of like a "speck" on the "shoulder of a gnat"! :)

made me think too about what's really important ...
kinda helps bring things into perspective

and, then it made me think about the *"who" or the *"what" that created it all ...
*depending on your belief system

either way "infinity" is a difficult concept to grasp ...
but, then it helps to further my own belief that there is / there has to be something beyond this life as we know it ...

just for the sake of "supposin' ..."?
after we "journey" on earth for 70 years or so ...
suppose we are allowed to "take a tour" ..
of each and every star, planet, or "whatever" in the known and unknown galaxies beyond? ...
*ofcourse, we would need to be "appropriately attired" to exist in each one of those "habitats" ...
but, considering how "well-fitted" we have become here on "mother earth" i'm sure it could be possible to go through some sort of "acclimation process" to exist elsewhere ...
some way / some how?

side note: just remembered something "kinda cool" ...
it's "earth day"! :)

just had another thought ...
- again just for the sake of "supposin' ..."

"supposin' ..."
we have all already taken a tour of the entire "cosmos" ...

and, ...
-especially in consideration of the "barrenness" which appears to now exist on any and every planet that we've been able to observe and access ...
- from our current "home base" location known as "Earth"...

"supposin' ..." every place where we have previously journeyed and existed in the "cosmos" ..
"supposin/ ..." we've already "depleted" and destroyed everything in each location prior to our current "10-20" known as"mother earth" ...
suppose "she" is truly our "last stand" ...
our "last chance" ...
our last opportunity to finally "get it right"?! ...
kind of a "sobering" thought don't ya think?!

inspite of ourselves ...
and, no matter how "dismal" things may appear at times ...
there's always "Hope" ...
or "Dum, Spiro, Spero" as some may say?! :)

anyways ...
just happened to "stumble" upon this recent article in regards to
"rebirth" or "regeneration" ...
"Scientists see the birth of a new planet" ...
"For the first time ever, scientists believe they've detected the birth of a new world around a distant Sun like star..."
"If confirmed, the discovery, using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, would provide scientists with the earliest view yet of how short-lived discs of material around young stars clump together in the early stages of planetary formation..."
here's a link to the entire article ...
http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2011/02/25/3149304.htm

if, and when, we are given a "second chance" ...
i hope we've learned our lessons well!
