It has been my experience that people will accept a person's geekiness if they accept that person. If he is of the unflattering stereotype (lives with parents well into 30s or 40s, bad hygiene, can't establish a relationship with the opposite sex, cares more about what's happening in comic books than what is happening in real world), then people will tend to not respect him. If he is an otherwise respectable person--say, he was able to make it through military training--then I think people will accept him. He'll probably still get a few chuckles, but when bullets are flying, one tends not to worry about things like geekiness. :-)
