In reply to: MCF 's message, "Blog Party: Villains" on 21:05:01 02/21/05 Mon

I read on your site about the blog party, but alas too late (I think) to take part - unless you don't mind some late arrivals at the do? I think I could dig out some onion and garlic dip if that would help! ;-)

My list of villains would have to include the following somewhere in, around or near the top 5:

1) Baltar (Battlestar Galactica)

Whether played by John Colicos or the equally good James Callis, this is a great villain - a true traitor to the species. Colicos' Baltar is a villain in the traditional sense - chasing down the heroes and thinking only of their destruction - while Callis' Baltar is a self-absorbed egoist desperate to keep his complicity in the destruction of humanity from the people around him. Either way Baltar is a great villain - and of course Callis got the great line "No more mister nice Gaius!" in the new BSG episode "Six degrees of separation".

2) Shockwave (Transformers G1)

Ok, I concede the point that David Kaye's Megatron is more sophisticated and has a nattier line in slightly camp catchphrases. I will also admit that Leonard Nimoy's take on Galvatron was an excellent one, played with a level of understated menace that I wouldn't have thought the man behind Spock was capable of. The original G1 Megatron was excellent for his wacky schemes.

Shockwave was different - he was cold, logical and completely devoid of anything resembling compassion. As such, he was absolutely brutal and came off a lot more as a "menacing machine" than any other Transformer before or since.

3) Napoleon (Animal Farm)

Another Baltar-esque traitor to his comrades. Takes the lead after a rebellion and ends up the same - if not worse - than the humans that ruled before he did. Whenever I read the section in "Animal Farm" where the 7 commandments are changed to read "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" I still get a shock.

This spot was almost taken up by O'Brien from 1984, but Napoleon pipped him to the post by cheating at cards. :-)

4) The Corinthian (The Sandman comic series)

Originally created as a nightmare by Morpheus, one that would reflect the darkest facets of human nature, the Corinthian manifested himself as a normal looking human male. Normal, that is, but for his eyes - which contained two sets of razor sharp teeth. He went out into the world to learn about its darkest parts, to make him a better nightmare, but ended up flawed, as Morpheus put it. Had a nice habit of eating people's eyes.

Was later destroyed by Morpheus and re-created later again, this time helping out the good guys, but still a chilling villain. Well done Neil Gaiman!

5) Morden (Babylon 5)

What do you want? 'Nuff said really! :-)

Well there you go - my top 5. Anyone got any comments, or a top 5 of your own?

As for the blog I still plan to start one MCF, I'm just working up to it...very slowly! ;-)

Cheers

FD
