Subject: Multiple attackers

Using equal or less force than your attacker can be seen as reasonable for a one on one scenario, however what happens when there are multiple attackers?

If there are for instance three people against you, the only way of winning (thereby succesfully escaping) is to take out the first two very, very quickly leaving a one on one with the third which you can take your time assuming the first two are not getting up to attack again any time soon.

The problem with this lies in that use of force, you would have to use excessive force to the first to enable a fast finish with the hope you have still got the space/time to deal with the others. However if you only use equal force with each assailant then you will almost certainly loose due to their superior numbers and have seven shades beaten out of you, potentially leading to substantial injuries (assuming you survive the night).

What are the legal aspects of this situation would the first/second attacker have legal grounds to sue if you broke his nose, wrist, arm, rib, collar bone etc.?
I have also heard that you are legally allowed to break the colar bone in self defense.
