My daughter, who is now in her 20's and thriving nicely, had the same issues your son does. We both experienced great stress throughout her elementary/middle school years (Texas in the 80's wasn't easy). She could spell every word perfectly, verbally when we would spend 2 hours every night on homework. But, writing it was not going to work. She flunked all spelling tests.

FINALLY, at 13, I approached the Lions Club for help with my daughter who was preparing for high school and was suffering great trepidation. The director recommended an occularist who specialized in helping people who were supposedly dyslexic (and some much more severely than my daughter). After a 3 hour eye exam, she recommended fun eye therapy in her office once a week for 12 weeks and some therapy at home.

My daughter loved the little eye tasks she had to practice. By the end of 12 weeks, she accomplished reading her first book (a novel even). We were both thrilled. There's a story, and some links, on my website. I highly recommend, as one other person on here commented, to have your child's eye's checked by a specialist who can teach your child's eyes to work together as a team.

Good luck! There are other options as well if you have the time to check out http://www.gabbyswordspeller.com/endorse.html
