There are a couple of things that I can recommend trying. Some children who know they are poor writers cannot bear the thought of 'proof of their inability' being left behind them on any page that they write. Some teachers I work with have found that writing on a handheld whiteboard where the child can wipe off the writing anytime is a help. In the same vein, and also possibly helping them to feel the shape of the letters is the activity of writing letters or words in a box of sand. It's cool, it engages our sense of touch more than typical writing and any errors can be covered immediately.
