I would certainly second the recommendation to get a professional evaluation for your son. What you are describing sounds so familiar. It was in 1st grade that we began to really notice the difficulties my son was having with school--particularly in spelling & reading, just as you describe. I felt so awful for him with spelling--he would try so hard & just could not get it to stick. We had him evaluated in 2nd grade and discovered that he is indeed dyslexic--very bright, but struggling w/ working memory, processing speed, etc. Ultimately, we moved him to a private school for children w/ dyslexia & it has been very positive for him. But there are other options as well--tutoring support, IEP's, 504's, etc. Regards,
