The important thing is early intervention. If you wait around for the perfect diagnosis, you waste valuable time. Dyslexia is not a rare disease that requires rocket science to diagnose. One child in five or ten is dyslexic. We need to know how to teach them, and we should move in before psychological damage is done. If you use methods approrpriate for dyslexics, you don't harm a child who proves not to be dyslexic. In fact, that child will make very rapid progress. Orton/Gillingham methods work with these children. And I have found that mnemonic pictures (turning a c into a curled up cat, etc.) speed things up. I also find that fish games provide a lot more practice than flashcards, and the kids pay attention because they like to win.
