Subject: Scouring the dying grasses...

...they searched. Some travelled alone; others in packs. They soared low to the ground, through the grasses, over the charred rocks and molten lava. There was a prescence here, a force or being that, once found, would prove a feast the likes of which the creatures had never seen. Yet, in the indeterminable hours since they first sensed it, no physical evidence of an arrival had been found.

Eventually, one pack of about fifteen arrived at a clearing. As all things on Yuggoth, the air was deceptively calm and peaceful. There was barely a breeze, yet something stirred the tall grasses. The hovering cerebral predators circled now, half going around to the left, half to the right. The unseen observer, now surrounded, paused. The tall stalks still swayed where last it passed. It took only a moment for the primitive cry to ring out as the pack attacked. They fastest of them collided in the middle, finding nothing there. In a frenzy, they turned on one another, driven wild by the deafening psychic energies now saturating their immediate vicinity. The observer pulled back his gaze now as fangs tore at grey matter over and over again. Enough had been observed for now. The Metroids had been expecting a body to accompany the unseen spy, and had found none. But the observer, in his own way as primitive, had learned a great deal by both these creatures' expectations and responses. That knowledge, however small, was but another fragment of the great void and yet, the next step in his growth.....
