Subject: Feis vs. Majors

For years now my daughter is always out danced/out placed at majors by dancers who she regularly does better than at feisianna. Is there something she can focus on to do as well on the big stage as she does at the smaller competitions? Any advice is appreciated.

Is your daughter using the full stage? My daughter scores better because she has long legs and can actually go all out. At a feis, she needs to make sure she doesn’t run out of space.

It really depends on what you mean. What does your daughter usually place at majors versus a feis? What is her age group? Is she in this region or another?

Local feiseanna are definitely judged differently than majors with large numbers. Something like arms or posture might be overlooked at a feis where the judges can watch each dancer closely and see that her other skills are better than the other dancers. At a major, judges make decisions quickly and the same arm or posture issue would be an automatic no recall.

My dancer is one of those that places better at majors. She has recalled at every Os and NANs & has been top 20 the last 2 years at Os although she does not always get top half at a feis. At a local feis, she is so rushed between dances and focused on changing her shoes and taping (UGH! can we stop with the tape??) At a major - the break between dances allows her the time to truly be ready for each dance and go full out knowing she will have recovery time before dancing again. Stamina is her most frequent judges comment at a local feis. She is also much more prepared for majors - she works harder at home and her TC has extra classes & privates. Her dancing is better at majors.
