Restoring the three-wire plug was probably a good idea, in that the green wire grounds the power supply chassis and the "harp" to drain off any static electricity that might accumulate. I can't think of any good reason for having disconnected it in the first place, although as you note, no harm was done.

The Pianocorder +170 volt power supply is like an old "hot chassis" AC/DC radio set. The negative terminal is at -85 volts with respect to AC neutral; similarly, the positive terminal is +85 volts with respect to AC neutral. Use of grounded test equipment is guaranteed to blow every IC on the printed circuit boards!! I wasn't paying attention one day and managed to do just that.
