Subject: These are the people that teach us

Just thought you should read what happens to professors in virginia who get laid off do to budget cuts. This is from my English professor. He graduated from UNC and DUke grad school.. so he isnt a moron..but he just got laid off do to budget cuts. This is the intoroduction to a page on his website posting our 2nd and 3rd paper topics. Warning..this is disturbing and scared me shitless..yet at the same time reassuring. Enjoy:

I am a bitter man. I am a spiteful man. I am a tired man (it's 4:30 am!). I'm overworked, underpaid, poor, wretched, despairing . . . and pissed! And just to show my spite I dare you to devise your own topics for the last two papers! What's more, I dare you to incorporate in your meager writings the most obstinate creature of all—Underground Man. Tremble when you read of him, because I tell you now: He and I are one! Tremble when you think of me grading the vile stacks of mangled syntax! You say, "He won't read them. He doesn't even care. He'll assign grades arbitrarily and be done." Well, I may indeed be arbitrary, but that's up to me. I'll read them all just to spite you. I'll pore over every word. I'll read and re-read. I'll look for correspondences you couldn't possibly have intended! I'll study every nuance. I'll spend long hours with them—hours I don't have! I'll work myself into a dreadful state agonizing over them. (And hating myself all the while, to be sure. . . . Why must I obsess? In a few short weeks I'll be unemployed. I won't know where my next meal is coming from—what will your papers mean to me then?) When you see the red ink strewn so recklessly on your papers, know that it is the very blood from my veins. And only after such careful, anguished study will I demonstrate my arbitrariness . . . and in a perfectly rational way. Rest assured, I'll give you better grades than you deserve!
