Slowly, the squirrel Maximal Knutz opened his eyes and struggled to speak.

"...w-why not ask--"
"--us y-yourself, Lieutenant? We're--"
"--okay?! Zeph!! Y-you're--"
"--okay, yeah, t-thanks to you bro. I guess when you got back in proximity of me, our bonded--"
"--sparks reacted again! So the damage those demons did to you--"
"--became your damage, too. Shared p-pain was halved, and--"
"--what would have finished one, w-as survived by t-two...."

A nurse blotted a mechfluid leak that had begun to develop around Knutz' optics. Rotor forced himself not to smile; he was glad they were alright, but made it a policy never to show emotion in front of his subordinates. One thing they had said did catch his attention though, and he questioned it now.

"Demons?"

"Yeah, boss. A pair of tentacle-monsters took us--"
"--by surprise. We held our own for awhile trying to contain--"
"--them but they headed out to Mickey'D's. Took out the manager and scared the customers before fleeing--"
"--to the Docking Bay. Knutz stayed behind while I--"
"--was nearly killed? You don't have to--"
"--say it? I wasn't planning on it; I t-told you there was no blame. Anyway, I managed to drop a ship on them but that didn't stop them, so that's when I--"
"--was nearly killed. I had stayed behind like Zeph said, with one of the docs from here: Antony, a real grouch but he got the manager working again. I found Zeph in a heap while DB Security had them surrounded. By now they're either in the brig--"
"--or in the furthest reaches of space? We had exhausted every possible measure Knutz, and after the Dinotron incident, I think security practices're gonna be a lot more--"
"--unforgiving? Kill or be killed? I thought we preserved peace, bro, you especially. When did you--"
"--become a hardcase? I didn't exactly; I'm just practical. Those things weren't human, and kept getting up. They couldn't be contained, and I'm sure Howitzer would never sanction lethal force, so the only logical--"
"--solution would have been banishment! Primus, bro, but you got the--"
"--smarts? I guess I did. And you--"
"--got the looks? This is--"
"--true considering we're twins and--"

The chatter stopped as Rotor cleared his vocal unit impatiently, speaking a single word.

"Fireshard?"

Zephyr shrugged weakly, and was slightly surprised when Knutz spoke.

"Over there, boss. I...I'm sorry."

The Lieutenant looked to where the squirrel was pointing....
