Decided to have a go myself. Prised off the electric motor control levers and eased off the plastic trim as far as possible. Then prodded and poked about at the micro switches that I could see but didn't appear to be getting anywhere. Thought that the task was beyond my botching skills so put it all back together. Lo and behold it all works again! No explanation as to the problem but pretty sure the 'technicians' at the main dealer would have a done a similar job and charged me 100 quid for the privelige.
