Since CD-ROM drives run about $30-$50 (U.S.) a piece, they are affordable to replace. But in order for it to be autodetected, the BIOS must be set up to cycle through the various drives at boot-up. My favorite configuration is: 3 1/2" floppy, hard drive, CD-ROM drive. Regardless and in your case, the CD-ROM must be somewhere in there. If you are reinstalling Windows, you don't even have to have the CD-ROM set to autodetect. You can simply use a boot disk in drive A (floppy) and then change the drive in DOS (i.e. c:, d:, e:, f:) to the CD-ROM and run "setup.exe".

I'm assuming that you are trying to re-install Windows. It's easiest with a boot disk. I've installed/reinstalled Windows about 20 times and I've gotten pretty good at it. In fact, in a security sense, it's a good idea to wipe your hard drive and re-install Windows every now and then (after backing up your essential files).

But to answer your question directly, if your BIOS is set to autodetect the CD-ROM and it's not reading, you probably need to get a new CD-ROM. But be sure and try using a boot disk before you run out and buy a new one. Oh, and I've never heard of a CD-ROM that needed drivers in order to work. I'm sure there are some, but I've built a lot of computers and I've never run across one that DOS/Windows didn't automatically recognize.
