Subject: Surreal

I think most of you know I live in Providence Rhode Island. The nightclub that burned was just one town over from Providence. There's nothing else on our local news stations and at work you can hear little conversations like: "my friends brother is still missing" or "John's sister had burns on both hands". It really seemed like a local disaster to me until I turned on BBC news and it was the top story. It was just surreal to hear the BBC reporter talking about my own area. I hope this isn't a bring down, it wasn't intended to be...it's just been inescapable for me since Thursday night.

Hi Cheesy, I think the closer things strike to home, so to speak, the more personally involved we become, so I can understand why you're consumed by it. It was a horrible tragedy, a horrible death for alot of people. And so close to you.....I remember in January when there were historically cold temperatures in India. 1800 people died and we hardly heard a word about it, it's almost as if that's too out of our realm to give shit. But then the seven astronauts died and the country is in mourning....I just think the closer one is to something, the more impact it has....obviously. - That's why I tend to watch BBC, I have some chance of hearing about what's happening outside of the US. Our local television channel has "the world in a minute" hmmmm. I also have to wonder as shocked as we are by having almost one hundred people killed and twice that injured, am I the only one thinking that will be the scenerio for many nights in Bagdad for the civilians.     - Living in NYC, most of our stories tend to become national/international. Most obviously with 9/11, which I saw out my window but also of course became a major global event. Local news here is so odd though, a mix of car crashes and murders, whatever party Donald Trump showed up at, and the light hearted human interest stuff.
