Author: Lieutenant Gabriel Michaels
Subject: An eerie teal glow...
In reply to: Lieutenant Gabriel Michaels 's message, "Gabe tossed the metal plate aside...." on 17:34:01 06/22/01 Fri

...allowed Lt. Michaels to see as he slowly came to. His breath curled and danced out as an eery mist as he exhaled nervously, looking around at his surroundings. He was in an icy cavern, at the bottom of a long shaft. How long he'd been down here was indeterminable, as well as not his biggest priority. He muttered a curse under his breath as he noticed the metal plaque which had so recently added to his seemingly endless misery. Gabe gave it an impressive kick, his younger days as a zero-G Soccer champion surfacing breifly. The metal spun across the room, wedging into the icy wall with a resounding "clank."

"'Clank?'" he asked aloud, "Now that doesn't seem right..."

Gabe tentatively approached the portion of the cavern wall where the projectile had become lodged. Sparks of electricity rippled over its surface, and he withdrew a reaching, curious hand at the last moment before a thin shell of ice spread out from the wall and covered it.

"--the hell?!" he exclaimed, "I am NOT seein' that! No way! Air must be thin down here and I'm hallucinating or--"

Gabe backed away as the teal glow behind the transulcent icy wall flickered like some mad, oversized circuit board. That's when he felt it; an impossible gust of warm air. Whirling, he saw tendrils of steam rising from a crack in the far wall. Tentatively he approached, the air quality stale but unexpectedly warm. He looked about futiley for something to test the fissure with, not wanting to risk the same fate as the metal plate at the far end of the cavern. A cracking sound warned him there was no need; he leapt back as a chunk of ice crumbled down before him, creating an opening. Cautiously, he made his way in.

Two dozen cylinders of frosted glass with metal bases lined either side of the room. On the front of each was a plate like the one he had discovered, and the teal glow provided an ominous, dim backlighting for the strange cases. Tearing a piece of cloth from his sleeve, he wiped off a thin frost from the first plaque, reading the writing(amazingly in English) aloud: "Ch--chim--pan-zor...what the blazes?" He checked a few more cylinders finding equally baffling names, with some duplication, all derivations of some terran primate. When he came to one that said "Rhesus Philbin", he was certain it was the tricks of a dying mind; he wasn't exploring some lab buried yards beneath the surface of an icy wasteland, but lying broken and dying yards beneath an icy wasteland; of this he was sure.

He came to the largest cyclinder in the room, composed entirely of a strange metal with no glass, flanked on either side by the ones he had been checking. On the front were the initials "S.O."

"Special Ops? Stay Out?

The cyclinder split down the middle and twin doors began to fold outward toward the startled lieutenant...
