from caring for Zythara. Her heart seems to freeze at the sight of the writhing D'ven. Shay casts a quick glance over at Sh'muel, but he didn't seem to have noticed. Or perhaps he was trying not to. She whispers in his ear, "Go fight some more Thread, Sh'mueli. You're no longer needed down here. Truly." With that, and a motion to the other weyrlings to continue helping Rieth and Zythara, Shay moves off towards D'ven, Lyranth not far behind.

Meanwhile, Chavala continues to battle Thread, though her heart is no longer into it. She feels that something is wrong, but she cannot place it. Suddenly, her gaze dashes to the spot D'ven and Prosth should be, and her eyes meet only empty space. She smothers a screech, but her terror remains, smouldering. Sinouth realizes that her rider needs to know what has happened, and so tells her, Chava, be still. Prosth. . . Prosth is dead. ~DEAD?~ She can hardly bear to ask, but she must know. ~And D'ven?~ Daven, is he not, now? He lives. She lets out a sob of relief, sorrowful tears mixing with those of happiness on her cheeks. "He LIVES!" she calls to the wings, not caring if they feel she has snapped, at long last. She tells Sinouth, ~That is Lyranth down there, is it not? Then we need not be there, much as I would like to. Come, let's fight Thread.~ Sinouth is surprised at her rider's stoicism, but she quite willingly obeys, even though her heart still mourns for Prosth.

Shay reaches D'ven and seizes hold of his flailing arms. The man had strength! But somehow in her desperation Shay manages to keep her grip steady. "D'ven! Hush, everything's going to be fine. . ." He squirms in her grasp, shouting and whispering in turns. "PROSTH! Where... where have they hidden you. . . I can't HEAR YOU! Speak up. . . Please. . . PROSTH!!!!!" She could feel his pain, could see it clearly reflected in his dark eyes. Tears welled up in her own eyes. What if she lost Lyranth? I will not let that happen. Feeling guilty relief wash over her, she nods and tightens her grip on D'ven. "Quick, Ly, get some numbweed! And get Lirth and Sh'muel over here too!" Though puzzled by the last request, Lyranth obeys, returning with two buckets of numbweed, plus the bronze and his rider. "What do you need us for?" Shay ignores the whiny note in Sh'muel's voice, knowing that it is only a result of his tense state. "Take him between. There's Thread wriggling about still. They must be dealt with." Even before she finishes speaking, Sh'muel has Daven on Lirth's back and is mounted himself. "Let's go!" he calls, but the command is unnecessary. The bronze has already brought himself aloft. Seconds later, the two go between, emerging a few moments after. Daven's face is slack and grey, but at least the Thread has been properly dealt with. The trio lands, and Sh'muel has Daven quickly laid out on the ground again. "At least he's stopped struggling for the moment. Now, if you'll excuse me. . ." Though it pains him to leave his brother like this, he knows Shay can handle this. He remounts Lirth, and they are soon back to fighting Thread, though worry still nags the bronzerider.
